Words are Powerful

Words are powerful and are often selected very carefully by journalists. Can the selection of one word over another impact the effect of a message? What words are defined as powerful? Share with us in a post at least 200 words long an instance when powerful words were used? What happened? Were they content appropriate? In what instances would you use these words for effect? And, in what instances would you avoid using them? Post to your own blog by Tuesday, October 4th at the beginning of class.

Identity Management

Identity Management theory refers to the ways we handle ourselves in various situations. We decide on a particular communication behavior to influence how others perceive us. Another important reason to communicate our identities is to become an active citizen, voicing our identitites. Goffman (1959) explains identity with an analogy of theatrical performance; when a person has motives for attempting to control the impression. Dillard (2000) add the actor who "perform" for the audience surrounding us. Discuss and apply the theory of Identity Management in this post after completing the viewing of the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Include the terms of face, facework, implicit kpersonality theory, and the halo effect in your post. The goal to is recognize and apply the perception of self and interpersonal communication.

Communication Breakdown

Can you think of a interpersonal situation in which there was a breakdown in communication? Now that you are familiar with the elements of the communication model, can you identify where the breakdown occurred? Do you think that if you or the participants would have been knowledgeable of the communication process, it would have eliminated the breakdown or made a difference? Post your personal story and apply the communication model in your details. This post is due this Tuesday, September 14th at the start of class.

Welcome to Interpersonal Communication

Welcome to Interpersonal Communication. I look forward to exchanging ideas, and experiences and exploring this exciting topic! We will be using a blog to apply and journey on a trip of self discovery this semester. Blog posts are to be taken serious. Take you time and dig deep and examine your interpersonal communication in these posts. I will not give credit to someone that has not taken the time or made the effort to write and examine their communication patterns. These blogs will be a focus of our discussion during class time, so please keep that in mind.
